App Design

I was constantly forgetting when my pets needed worming and other regular treatments. Writing the date given on the packaging and throwing it back in the cupboard was no longer working for me. I needed some kind of system to keep track of everything, but being a creature of habit, I have never properly utilised the calendar app on my phone.

There are plenty of pet apps that can solve this problem, but many of them come with accounts, logins, subscriptions, notifications and other features that I personally didn't want or need. So, I decided to make my own.

With the use of the no-code builder Lovable, and later Claude, I designed an app that allows a user to input their pet details, treatments, medications and other important records in one place.

I initially created CuePet for myself, so I approached the design from the perspective of what I would actually want to use. I was honestly tired of creating accounts, remembering yet another password, dealing with two-factor authentication, paying for subscriptions and receiving notifications from apps that I didn't necessarily need.

So I skipped them all.

Instead, CuePet is designed to be something the user can open when they need it, with upcoming and overdue treatments visible at a glance. This does mean the app doesn't remind the user through push notifications, but that was an intentional decision. I wanted the app to be useful without becoming another app competing for the user's attention.

I also made the decision not to store user data outside of their own device. This keeps the app simple and gives the user control over their information. For users who want to back up their data or move it to another device, CuePet includes an import/export option using a .json file.

A major focus throughout the design process was keeping the app simple and user friendly. I wanted the experience to feel more like a digital version of the information you might otherwise keep on a piece of paper or inside a cupboard, rather than an overly complicated pet management system.

The result is an app designed to do one thing well: make it easy to keep track of your pets' important treatments and records, without subscriptions, accounts or unnecessary clutter.
